Most spiritual practices around the world embrace the concept of eternal life... be it the Buddhist and Hindu beliefs in reincarnation and Nirvana, or the Christian belief in Heaven. My track "We Are Eternal" expresses that we are more than what we see. As well as physical beings, we are made of emotions, feelings, energy and spirit... things that will exist when our physical body no longer does. We can all share this belief, no matter what race or religion we are.
And to me, this also expresses what we create as musicians. Something eternal, that lives on long after the composer is gone.

There is a beautiful phrase in the Japanese language, “Yohaku no bi”, which means “The beauty of empty space”.
Last year, I had the profound experience of composing music on top of a sand dune in the Simpson Desert in Central Australia. Not only was this massively inspirational, it also somehow opened up a new dimension in my music – a space, or perhaps a spaciousness, that wasn’t there before.
I could feel this as I was composing and recording this EP, I but was at a loss as to how to describe it… until I came across this phrase. Trust the Japanese, with their understanding of the principles of Zen, to nail it!
Sometimes we can crowd our music, our art, our minds and our lives with “stuff” that we think should be there… without taking the time to step back and realise that sometimes less is more. And what’s not there is just as important as what is.

I have always been haunted by this song... but rather than the 60’s pop inspired original by The Rolling Stones, it is the ethereal folky early 70s version by Melanie that I really remember.
Her soft guitar and raspy voice sang about a spirit that couldn't be tamed, as the melody and lyrics left us hanging and wondering... who was Ruby Tuesday? And why are we saying goodbye to her?
It's always both fun and profound to revisit a song that has been with you most of your life and re-imagine it in a new way. I hope you enjoy my interpretation.
